Reggae: The Beating Heart of Popular Music
Reggae: The Beating Heart of Popular Music
No other country has had such an influence on modern popular music as Jamaica. Bob Marley is a global symbol of Jamaican reggae music, but this tiny island of barely 3 million inhabitants has produced many other great artists and has pioneered new sounds and recording techniques. Reggae has directly influenced genres like Disco, Hip Hop, and Electronic Dance Music (EDM), while many popular artists, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Stevie Wonder, have recorded their own reggae songs. Through the use of music, video, and photographs from this treasured island, Dr. John F. Lyons traces the history and impact of reggae music.
John Lennon: The Solo Years (1970-1980)
Can you imagine a world without “Imagine?” The 10-year period from the Beatles break up in 1970 to Lennon’s tragic murder in 1980 was a fascinating period of successes and failures for the ex-Beatle. Using audio and visual content we’ll explore the music from “Imagine” to “(Just Like) Starting Over”, his controversial immigration struggle, his wild “lost weekend” and the quiet househusband years culminating with the release of his final album Double Fantasy.
Hosted by College of DuPage professor, Gary Wenstrup.

The Rule of Rum
The Rule of Rum
Food historian Cynthia Clampitt shares the reason rum arose where it did and when it did. She'll talk about how pirates got involved, and who really said “yo ho ho” (not the pirates), but also how rum helped unite the 13 Colonies, as it became one of the issues that led to the American Revolution. She'll also talk about how it also led to a revolt in its next home after the Caribbean: Australia, and how it affected culture and history after that.
Cynthia Clampitt is a writer, geographer, and food historian. She has written textbooks for every major educational publisher in the U.S., including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and National Geographic Learning. She is the author of Midwest Maize: How Corn Shaped the U.S. Heartland and Pigs, Pork, and Heartland Hogs: Wild Boar to Baconfest, as well as of the award-winning travel narrative, Waltzing Australia—and it was in Australia that she first became aware of the international impact of the rum trade. Clampitt is a member of the Culinary Historians of Chicago, the Society of Woman Geographers, the Society of Midland Authors, and the Agricultural History Society.
