Spring is here! Take part in the backyard gardening hobby that's growing in popularity, and experience the joy of harvesting power crops of healthy, delicious, sweet, crunchy vegetables! This topic reviews the basic techniques of vegetable gardening. Everything from site selection, soil preparation, and seed starting through fertilization, watering, pest control, and harvest will be covered. Both new and experienced gardeners will learn something they can use.
Mark Lyons has been an avid vegetable gardener ever since childhood. He got his start helping his parents grow their vegetable garden, an activity in which he eagerly participated while growing up in Arlington Heights, Illinois. After high school, Mark attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he took courses in biology, botany, biochemistry, agricultural economics, and home vegetable gardening, and received a BS in Agriculture. He then went on to graduate school at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, where he received his MS degree in Agriculture.
In 1988, Mark took over the operation of his parents’ vegetable garden, and spent the next several years cultivating and harvesting substantial amounts of tomatoes and cucumbers. In 2003, Mark began developing vegetable gardens for friends and family. His success in these endeavors, fueled by his love of gardening and his strategic consulting skills, led Mark to develop Green Thumb at Your Service.
