The staff and board of Bloomingdale Public Library wish you a very happy new year! The library will be closed on December 31 and January 1 for the holiday. You can still access the catalog and all of our online resources at www.mybpl.org


Winter Reading Program




It's not too late to sign up for It's the Season for Reading!, our winter reading program, that began on December 23 and runs through February 7. We have a program for all ages. Children can sign up at the Youth Services Desk and teens and adults can sign up at the Adult Services Desk or online here! Get in on the fun and sign up to read great books and be eligible to win a prize!

Historical Book Discussion

The Historical Book Group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Books are selected on topics of American history from pre-Revolutionary War to current time including biographies, history books, historical fiction and classics. If you are a new resident in Bloomingdale or would like to find out more about the library, attend our Library tour offered on the first Saturday of each month. Join a reference librarian as we give a short overview of all the library has to offer. We will show you where various items are located, and tell you about the services we offer, so you can get the most out of your library. We also offer library tours by appointment. English Conversation Group

Wednesday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 22
9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

This drop-in conversation group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and is designed to give adult English-as-a-second language learners practice speaking English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Individuals are welcome to attend whenever they can. All adult English learners are welcome. Registration is not necessary for this free program held in the Library Conference Room.

Seniors' Game Day

Join us for an afternoon of cards, board games and even video games especially for adults 55 and over! This monthly program is a great way to take a break from your day and meet others who share your interests. The Library provides the refreshments and a great selection of games to try. There is no registration needed for this free program. Bring your friends!

Chicago Auto Show - The World's Greatest!

Chicago Auto Show Historian and Curator Mitch Frumkin will present a fascinating look back at the 105 editions of the Chicago Auto Show. Crafters unite! Quilters, scrapbookers, rubber stampers, needleworkers, and other crafters can bring current projects to the library for this monthly open craft group. Network with other crafters, dedicate time to work on your projects, and discover ideas for your next craft! The library will provide the space and a featured craft; you bring your projects, ideas, and creativity! In January, we’ll be featuring our new Silhouette Cameo machine that will allow you to create a wall decal or fabric iron-on.

Visit the librarians on the first Thursday of every month for a quick craft lesson. They'll supply the materials to get you started, and you can finish on your own.





Family Game Days (Grades 1-6, Parents welcome too)

Join us for an all around fun gaming time with board games, video games, and snacks! Come by yourself, bring a friend, or bring your family! See who can get the highest score on Wii Bowling, who can sink the most battleships or who is the champion checker player. Children under 9 must be accompanied by a parent.



Tuesdays with Toys (Drop In! Ages 3 months-5 Years)

Registration is not required.
Tuesdays with Toys is an informal program giving parents with small children the opportunity to meet and talk with other parents, while children play with toys and games. Toys and games are most appropriate for children ages 3 months to 5 years.



Winter Reading Program: It's the Season for Reading! (Infants-6th Grade)

December 23-February 7

Sign up at the Youth Services Desk
Beginning on December 23, you may register in person at the Youth Services Reference Desk to receive your information packet and starting prize. Complete your reading log by reading for just three hours. Turn in your log by February 7 to receive your final prize and be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing.



It's the Season for Reading Scavenger Hunt! (All ages)

December 23-January 5
Registration is not required.
Tis the season for reading and a Scavenger Hunt! Stop in the Youth Services department during Winter Break to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the department and look for clues. Winners enter a drawing for prizes!

Play to Learn with DuPage Children's Museum (Ages 3-6 years and their families)

The DuPage Children's Museum is taking exhibits on the road! The Bloomingdale Public Library and the Museum have come together to offer a wonderful program that focuses on play AND learning. Children will engage in an interactive story while adults learn how to share Math, Art and Science concepts with preschoolers in a fun and easy way. Together, children and caregivers will enjoy the museums portable exhibits and hands-on projects that can be done right in the home!

Lego Madness (Family Program)

Registration is required and beings Monday, December 2 for Bloomingdale Residents. Non-residents may register beginning January 5.

Come explore our Lego building program with special extra activities just for tonight! Technology, science, art...it's all part of the Lego Madness experience! While this is a family program, please be advised the Lego blocks pose a choking hazard for children age 3 and under and adult supervision is required for this age group. This program is provided through a generous donation from Salerno's Rosedale Funeral Chapel.



Rope Warrior (Drop In! All Ages!)

Join us for an afternoon featuring Guiness World Record holder David Fisher, AKA The Rope Warrior. He's been seen on the Today Show, Good Morning America and has performed around the world. This high-energy, high-impact Ropenastics show has mesmerized audiences of all ages.



Reading to Rover (Grades 1-5)

Tuesdays, January 21, 28, February 4, and 11
6:30-8:00 p.m.

Registration is required and begins December 2.

Children will have the opportunity to read to special therapy dogs. This stress-free, non-judgmental environment allows children to build confidence in their reading. All dogs are from PAWSitive Therapy. To reserve your time with a terapy dog, call 630-924-2740 or stop by the Youth Services Department. There is no online registration for this program.



Dueler's Guild

Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic

Third Saturday of the month

Your move! It’s time to duel! Calling all players of collectible games, ages nine and up! Join us for open play, a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, and snacks! Feel free to bring in other games, including Bakugan, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and other collectible card games. No registration required.

A Yu-Gi-Oh! card tournament is held every first Teen Game Night of the month (the second Thursday). Tournaments are single duel, and no proxy cards are allowed during tournament play.

Prepare for the ACT with a free practice test! Are you taking the ACT in February or April? Then this practice exam is for you! A Kaplan representative will proctor the full-length exam, which will last approximately 3.5 hours. Students will receive test results and an analysis of their exam performance at the ACT Test Strategies 101 workshop on Saturday, January 18. If you are unable to attend the workshop, test results will be mailed to you at a later date.

ACT Test Strategies 101 Workshop

Saturday, January 18
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Registration Limit: 40

During this one hour workshop, students will learn how to score higher on the ACT using key strategies. The format and content of the test are covered, including ways to take advantage of the test format to maximize efficiency on the exam. Parents and teens are encouraged to attend together.

Students who took the Practice ACT Exam on Saturday, January 4 will receive their scores during this seminar. If you are unable to attend the workshop, your scores will be mailed to you at a later date. Register at the Reference Desk, by phone at (630) 924-2730, or online.
