Library Building Open for Limited Services

The library building is open with limited services available. We are open our normal business hours:

  • Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • Friday-Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Tier 3 - New Requirements

Under the November 20th Tier 3 state mitigations, everyone visiting the library must follow these requirements to help protect our patrons and staff:

  • Building capacity of 35 patrons at a time.
  • Short visits are encouraged. Each patron will be allowed in the building for up to one hour.
  • Any person over two years of age must wear a face covering/mask over their nose and mouth at all times. (Required under the Illinois Department of Public Health's Emergency Rules)
  • Maintain social distancing of at least six feet apart.
  • Wash your hands and/or use hand sanitizer often.

Library Spaces - Rules and Restrictions

When you visit us, the library will look a little different. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Furniture and tables have been removed or spaced out to help maintain social distancing. Limited seating is available, but short visits are encouraged.
  • Signs have been placed on the floor to maintain social distancing at service desks.
  • Signs have been placed on the floor for one-way usage of the library aisles/shelving areas.
  • Elevators are limited to one person/family at a time.
  • Toys in the play area are currently unavailable.
  • Select computers will not be available to help maintain social distancing.
  • Meeting rooms and study rooms are closed for public use through January 31, 2021.

Limited Services Offered

At this time, we will be offering the following limited services:

  • Check outs and holds
  • Library card registration
  • Reference help and Reader’s Advisory
  • Computer Lab (limited seating) and laptops
  • Copying, scanning, and printing
  • Notary services

Computer Use

Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Lab computers have been reduced for patron health and safety, and sessions are limited to one hour. Laptops may also be checked out at the Reference Desk. Laptops require a picture ID to use and they must be returned before the library closes each day.

Virtual Programs, Take and Make Programs
The library is expanding our online programs for all age groups! You can view the full schedule of virtual library programs on our online calendar. Some programs require registration, which will be noted in the program description.

We’re also offering Take and Make craft kits for kids, teens, and adults. Pick up these kits at the library to make creative crafts at home!

Adult Take and Make Craft Kits
Adults can view upcoming kits on the online calendar. Kits are limited, so email Kristina Giovanni at kgiovanni@mybpl.org or call (630) 924-2735 to reserve your kit.

Teen Take and Make Craft Kits
Teens can view upcoming kits on the online calendar. Kits are limited, so email email Katie Yager at kyager@mybpl.org to reserve your kit.

Kid's Take It, Make It Craft Kits
Want to create a craft? Each week, staff will design new kid's craft kits for 24/7 pick up at our library craft container along Fairfield Way. Stop by anytime to take a kit to make at home!

Digital Library Services - Download eBooks, Movies, and More From Home

Ancestry Remote Access Extended to December 31, 2020
Access to Ancestry Library Edition has been temporarily expanded to library cardholders working remotely, courtesy of ProQuest and Ancestry. Remote access will be available until the end of December and will be re-evaluated monthly as needed. The extension of in-home access to the library's database is at the discretion of Ancestry and ProQuest.

Online Card Registration
Online Card Registration - Sign up for a digital library card to access all of our online resources including eBooks, eAudiobooks, online databases, homework help, and more. You must be at least 13 years of age to register.


Unavailable Services

Curbside Service Final Day - Wednesday, July 1
When we reopened the library, we discontinued curbside service. The final day to pick up items via curbside was Wednesday, July 1. If you need accommodations because you're unable to enter the library, please call the Reference Desk at (630) 924-2730.

Meeting Rooms and Group Study Room
Our meeting rooms and Group Study Room are closed through January 31, 2021. They are being used for overflow storage and staff areas to promote social distancing.


Other Information

Returns & Book Drop
All library items should be returned via the outside book drop. If the book drop is full, please don’t leave items outside the book drop or the building. The book drop will be emptied throughout the day, so please try again at a later time.

Quarantine: Returned materials will remain on your account during a recommended quarantine period of at least 3 days. Once returns are out of quarantine, they will be removed from your account. Bloomingdale is a fines free library and there will be no fines assessed on items that become overdue during the quarantine period.

There is currently no plan to phase in a partial check-in process for quarantine materials. Our goal is to reduce the risk to staff handling these items. We keep all returned materials confined to the lobby area to reduce the chance of cross-contamination to the rest of the building.

Staff handling incoming materials follow strict PPE requirements and do not handle materials again until items are deemed safe via the protocol.

During the quarantine period, staff are happy to override any limits patrons may reach and we are exploring potentially removing limits on specific materials to accommodate patrons.

Donations Closed
For the foreseeable future, the library is not accepting donations of items. Please don’t leave donations outside the library or in the book drop.

Requesting Items From Other Libraries - Hold Restrictions
Resource sharing/requesting items from other SWAN libraries started on Tuesday, July 7. If you can't place a hold, that library has not turned on resource sharing yet.

Every library in our consortium chooses when to turn on item sharing. While Bloomingdale has turned sharing back on, other libraries may not allow holds/transfers yet.

Interlibrary loan (ILL) requests opened on September 10, 2020. See our Interlibrary Loan page for more information.

If you would like to request an item for purchase, please email bdref@mybpl.org with the item information, your name, and your library card number. We will forward your information to the selector, who will evaluate if the item can be purchased for the library.
