EMPOWERMENT DOLL WORKSHOP

Join Teaching Artist, Creativity Coach and Doll Maker Victoria Reeves to learn how to design and hand-sew your own Empowerment Doll. Each doll has an inspirational message and intention. What (one word) message would you like your doll to express? Let's brainstorm and create art together!

First, you'll choose from brightly-colored doll forms, heads, (complete with many shades of skin), hair, buttons, beads and trim. Then stuff your doll, hand-sew the head to the body, add hair, draw on the face and embellish your doll with trim, buttons, and beads. Finally, write a positive message on back and give your unique doll a name. After the workshop, put it in a special place - as a reminder that you are powerful and wonderful!

Victoria Reeves teaches in libraries, schools, community centers and museums around Chicagoland. She also sells her Empowerment Dolls at local markets and teaches Story Craft Writing Courses online.

Please join us for a fantastic Zoom presentation hosted by Michelle Nichols!

Earth's nearest planetary neighbor is far from earthlike. With its acid clouds, searing temperatures, and crushing air pressure, it seems vastly different from our home planet Earth. We'll discuss what we know about Venus now, what it may have been like in the past, and what Venusian mysteries we would still like to solve - as well as how the study of planets around other stars helps us learn more about Venus.

Michelle Nichols is Director of Public Observing at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, IL, and has worked at the Adler since June 1995. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University. Ms. Nichols leads all of the Adler Planetarium's telescope, observatory, and public sky observing initiatives and events. Before landing at the Adler Planetarium, Michelle worked at U.S. Space Camp (Titusville, FL), the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium (Cocoa, FL), and the Staerkel Planetarium (Champaign, IL).

With the costs of buying, maintaining, and repairing a car going up, up, up, now more than ever it is important to know as much about your car as possible.

LWV Unite and Rise 8.5 Fall Kick-Off

Mon, 07/28/2025 - 15:07
09/23/25 @ 5:00pm - 09/23/25 @ 8:45pm Room A/B Bloomingdale Public Library Community Group A fun, interactive, and informative event to launch our League’s Unite and Rise 8.5 campaign. On April 17, League of Women Voters CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn issued a clear call: our country is in a constitutional crisis. Under the current administration, we've seen the erosion of checks and balances, open defiance of the Supreme Court, and the unlawful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. We the People must fight back. That’s why the League is launching Unite & Rise 8.5, a bold campaign to mobilize 8.5 million people—the critical mass needed to drive nonviolent democratic change. Our speaker is Dr. William Muck, Professor of Political Science at North Central College, who will present Under Attack: The State of Democracy Around the World. Professor Muck will explore global trends in democracy, highlighting data that shows democracy under attack in every region of the world. He will explore the implications of this democratic decline and focus specifically on the case of American democracy. He will also reflect on the dramatic actions taken by the Trump administration and offer thoughts on how they fit within this broader anti-democratic moment.
